In 1898, while “Gold Fever” drove most people down river to Dawson, two fellows decided to head up river and investigate rumours of copper outcrops in the Whitehorse area. Together, John McIntyre and William Granger established the Copper King and Copper Queen claims, starting a copper rush. Over 1,000 claims were staked within about a 20 mile north-to-south line contributing to making Whitehorse more than just a staging area for the northern gold fields.
